Cat Flight

# Cat Flight

Take your algebra to the sky

## distance = rate x time

The Center for Algebraic Thinking requested an iOS app as a tool for learning the distance equals rate times time equation. I was awarded a grant for my design bid and developed it over the summer of 2013. It is written in Objective-C and most graphics were created with Google Drawings. Cats were created by artist Brita Ness in Adobe Illustrator.

Cat Flight contains four levels to push your algebraic prowess. The journey begins with simply solving for missing variables and concludes with complex word problems. These cats are ready for lift off.

## Level 1: d=rt

Level 1 asks the user to solve for the missing variable of the core equation. The user inputs their answer and launches Scribbles' hot air balloon. Scribbles' balloon rises up according to the values inputted. After the allotted time, Scribbles' position is assessed.

In this case, the user performed with flying colors. The sun rises and a plane crosses the sky, informing the user of their algebraic achievement. A new problem is then displayed. This process continues for ten correct answers, raising the sun to its highest in the sky.

## Level 2: ep-sp = v(et-st)

Level 2 heightens the equation. Now take Tad for a ride, accounting for start and end times and positions.

Not to fear. Help is on its way.

Press the variables to reveal their values. The missing variable will not be revealed.

## Level 3: word problems

Level 3 introduces a new challenge to the user, required to parse the values from a block of text. Both cats take to the sky with varying velocities, start positions, and start times.

## Level 4: red-eye

Two cats pass in the night. One returns to land while the other sets out for an evening flight. Help Tad and Scribbles navigate the night sky.
